Navigating the Holidays: A Guide for High-Performing Female Professionals to Enjoy the Holidays
Pregame the last quarter of the year and actually enjoy the holidays.

A New Strategy for Your Best Fourth Quarter Yet

As high-performing female professionals in our 40s and 50s, we understand the immense pressure and stress of balancing work, family, and personal well-being. As if the performance demands at work weren't enough, we now enter the fourth quarter of the business cycle while simultaneously preparing for the holiday season.

Women have been conditioned to believe that being successful means sacrifice. We usually sacrifice our needs like sleep, exercise, and eating healthfully, to meet work deadlines and care for our family.  We’re too exhausted to enjoy the fruits of our efforts. I am speaking from experience.

Guess what? You can have it all and actually enjoy it. To do it, you need a new strategy for the three key areas of your life. It's crucial to prioritize mental health, physical well-being, and nutrition during this time of year to ensure peak performance both at work and in our personal lives.

Let’s explore three proactive strategies to help you maintain optimal performance throughout the holidays.

1. Prioritize Self Care

As women, we are more likely to put everyone else first. If you’re depleted, you will not make the best choices for work or at home.  Amidst all the hustle and bustle of year-end deadlines and holiday preparations, carving out time for self-care is essential.

Make a conscious effort to engage in activities that rejuvenate your mind and body. This could include practicing mindfulness or meditation techniques to reduce stress levels or engaging in regular exercise routines that boost energy levels while promoting overall well-being.

Remember that taking care of yourself is not selfish; it's an investment in your ability to perform at your best. We look at our client's existing schedule to identify opportunities to work in self-care. Be your best friend, and start taking care of yourself with these simple changes.

2. Set Boundaries

As high-performing executives, it's easy for us to get caught up in work-related tasks even during holidays when we should be spending quality time with loved ones. To maintain a healthy work-life balance during this period, set clear boundaries between professional responsibilities and personal commitments.

Communicate these boundaries effectively with colleagues by managing expectations regarding availability outside working hours or delegating tasks appropriately before taking time off. This allows you to be fully present with your family. You’re also setting a good example for your staff.

Incorporate this formula from a recent blog post into your life to help you set boundaries effectively so you can get the best of both - happy personal relationships and enhanced job performance.

3. Mindful Nutrition

The holiday season often brings an abundance of indulgent food options that can derail even the most disciplined eating habits. By applying mindful nutrition, you can maintain peak performance throughout this period as well as support your overall health goals.

  • Plan and prepare nutritious meals in advance to avoid relying on unhealthy options during busy work days or at family gatherings.
  • Incorporate stress-reducing foods into your diet, such as omega-3 fatty acids found in chia seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, hemp seeds, brussels sprouts, and avocados. These foods can help combat the effects of stress on the body and mind.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, as dehydration can negatively impact cognitive function and overall performance. Watch this short video about nutritional empowerment to learn how to start fueling your body and mind.

The Takeaway

As high-performing female executives heading into the fourth quarter while juggling holiday commitments, it's crucial to prioritize our well-being. By taking proactive steps to care for our minds, bodies, and nutrition during this time, we can ensure peak performance both at work and within our families.

Remember that self-care is not a luxury but a necessity for maintaining long-term success. Embrace these strategies with intentionality and watch how they positively impact your ability to thrive amidst the demands of this season.
